Fatos Nano's story: When I was 9 years old, I almost died; how I was

While Fatos Nano is hospitalized, Rudina Xhunga has brought back an interview he gave to "Koha Jonë", where he shared some details from his life.

One of them was that Nano almost died when he was only 9 years old.

- How does "Koha Jonje" address you, after leaving prison, Mr. or friend Fatos?

Let's become friends, the better. Perhaps, friend is a less official and more human appellation.

Where were you born and when?

In the Tirana maternity hospital, in September 1952.

Have you been told about any special signs of the day of birth?

It was an ordinary day. Strange signs, I don't know how foreboding appeared later. At the age of 9, my mother gave birth to me once more. While I had collapsed, after a feverish convulsion, and my grandmother thought I was asleep, my mother, newly returned from the school where she taught, with the intuition that only a mother has, snatched me from imminent death and took me on a bicycle beyond any speed of imaginable in the hospital.

Were you an ambitious student at school or...?

My early vision has been to enjoy life without neglecting to prepare for everything I might encounter along the way. I have always accepted and faced challenges, but I cannot say that I have won them all. Ambitious? Of course, in the constructive sense.

- When did you become interested in socialism?

At that time socialism was the beacon idea. Blue sky, where you can play, at least until adolescence. The relationship with the life of my generation has not been very anxious and therefore without many peaks. There were those who wished for the tops until they heard some... police whistle. For example, Fatos Lubonjës and I were expelled from high school for a completely banal event. Some have encountered the restrictions of the regime at an early age and some have not, due to a combination of circumstances.

- Why a student of Political Economy?

Ideas at all times respond to certain circumstances, and it is an absurdity proven by history to carry a priori conclusions from one era to another, as it imposes the slavery of thought on succeeding generations. Finally, socialism today is an idea, a doctrine, and I would like to single out as its pillar social solidarity, the idea of equal opportunities, or more precisely the mechanism of protection of the marginalized layers of society.
