Members of the Democratic Party will vote on May 26 for the new party leader. So far, only Sali Berisha is in the running. Other names that have expressed interest, such as Ervin Salianji and Evi Kokalari, are expected to be excluded due to their non-member status.
The head of the "Brain Gain" Department in the DP, Tedi Kopliku, stated that there are no formal obstacles to candidacies, but emphasized the difficulty of the race against Berisha.
"Anyone is free to run against Berisha. The historical leader is not easy to defeat. The race for anyone who would try to defeat Berisha is not common. In this sense, I hope there will be candidates, but it is not something that is feared as is implied. I do not know that he has made an official request other than the public battle he is waging. The battle of Salijanj is a media battle," said Kopliku.
Kopliku says that to be part of the DP you have to follow certain rules, but there is no shrinkage, and according to him, there are even calls for the approach of new figures.
"I personally don't see it as that dramatic. The PD functions. There are departures for certain issues, but this does not indicate a contraction. The conditions of the battle that the PD has are not easy, it is almost self-sacrifice. The PD functions through a hierarchy. There is a political battle that is fought according to the rules and if you have to be part of this party, you have to be according to the rules," said Kopliku.
