With the partisan behavior of an authoritarian father who shouts at the child: "I won't explain it because you have to do as I say", the US ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, has given one of the most absurd interviews that American diplomats have ever uttered. Wanting to send messages that the Ibri Bridge, which separates the two parts of Mitrovica, should not be opened for car traffic, he told Radio Free Europe (See the full story here) that this initiative of the Kurti government could affect the safety of NATO soldiers, including American ones.
"We believe that this risk increases the threat, the possibility of violence and other problems, both for the local community and for NATO soldiers, including American soldiers who are working to ensure peace and security in Kosovo. We take very seriously any action that could affect the security and protection of American soldiers working to support Kosovo", stated Jeffrey Hovenier, emphasizing the fact that this action could incite violence, but "naively" ignoring the perpetrators possible to her: "I can't talk about who can cause violence."
Hoping that the government will listen to this and take these concerns into consideration, Hovenier said that the US has been challenged by the Prime Minister and his Government in several aspects.
"I have to say that the quality of our partnership is not what we would hope it would be on some of these issues related to how he deals with the north and how he manages the dialogue."
He added that the uncoordinated actions of the Government in the north reduce the enthusiasm of the USA to support Kosovo on its Euro-Atlantic path.
These threats and blackmail in form seem very serious, but in order to measure their weight, one must first understand the essence of this absurd attitude that cannot withstand even a basic logical reasoning. Only if you have the arrogance of the strongest and Lawrence of Arabia syndrome do you have the courage to utter these arguments in public. Let's take turns...
Ambassador Hovenier admits that the Ibri Bridge must be opened. He cannot publicly oppose the free movement nor the territorial sovereignty of Kosovo, a state which his country has recognized since 2008. Therefore, he makes the excuse: "now is not the time". But why wasn't there time? Because openness can incite violence. He refuses to say yes to threats of violence by Belgrade and the local Serbs incited by Vucic who see the bridge with barricades as a symbol of the division of Kosovo. And this violence of theirs can put the lives of American soldiers in danger, the reasoning leads the ambassador to the edge. But what any sane person might ask: when moving over the bridge is the right thing to do, why does it have to cause violence? And if the violence is instigated by those who are against normalcy, why is the attention drawn to the Kosovar side? And if the endangering of the lives of American soldiers is inspired by Belgrade, why was the Euro-Atlantic future of Kosovo penalized? So if in essence, Prishtina is doing the right thing by facilitating communication between normal people, why is Kurti threatened and not Vucic?
A man who is convinced that he has the right with him, gives answers to these dilemmas. You know what childish and arrogant argument Ambassador Hovenier gives to avoid them: loyalty to America. "Kosovo tells us that it is the most pro-American country in the world, therefore, I would hope that the most pro-American country in the world listens to the specific requests of the American Government..." was the funny message from the father saying: "do as I say".
The Government of Kosovo insists on opening the bridge over the Iber River, which separates the Albanian-majority South Mitrovica and the Serbian-majority North Mitrovica, for the circulation of vehicles. Despite the opposition of the QUINT and NATO countries, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that the bridge should be opened and that it "is not against anyone".
Even at the last government meeting, Kurti stated that the opening of the Ibri Bridge in Mitrovica is not against Kosovo's partners.
He said that Kosovo is a normal state and as such it should have normal bridges - open.
"The government and I believe that freedom of movement and the rule of law on one side and peace and security on the other side are possible together and right for the country, society and state, citizens and communities. We will continue discussions and coordination with our partners. The opening of the bridge is not against anyone, least of all our partners. Kosovo is a normal state and its bridges should be normal, which means open", said Kurti./ Lapsi.al
