Lawyers object to the Prosecution's evidence and the request for sentencing of former KLA leaders

The closing arguments phase in the trial of former KLA leaders continues at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague. Today, Kadri Veseli's defense team continues to present its final arguments before the trial panel.

A day earlier, attorney Rodney Dixon contested the charges against his client and stated that the Prosecution has not presented evidence linking Veseli to war crimes. He argued that during the period when the criminal acts were allegedly committed, Veseli did not stay in Kosovo for a long time.

Dixon stressed that Veseli's name is mentioned over 260 times in the final file of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office, but according to him, in no case is evidence presented of concrete involvement in the alleged crimes.

Before Veseli's defense began, Hashim Thaçi's defense team concluded its presentation. Attorney Lluka Misetic requested his release and opposed the Prosecution's request for a sentence of 45 years in prison for the four defendants.

Lawyer Pierre-Richard Prosper also opposed the Prosecution's positions, particularly regarding the assessment of international defense witnesses. He argued that the witnesses had knowledge of the KLA structure.

Closing statements began on Monday with the Prosecution's presentation and constitute the final phase of the trial, where the parties present their positions before the verdict.

Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi face charges from the Specialist Prosecutor's Office, which they have contested. The trial began on 3 April 2023, about three years after the indictment was confirmed, while the accused are being held in custody in The Hague.
