Serbia has reacted to the trilateral meeting between the defense chiefs of Albania, Kosovo and Croatia in Tirana, which aimed to deepen military cooperation and coordination.
The Ministry of Defense in Belgrade described this as a serious violation of Resolution 1244, while emphasizing that efforts to further institutionalize and strengthen the Kosovo Security Force through regional military agreements represent a direct blow to the international legal order and a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
"This action represents a clear disregard and serious violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 and the Kumanovo Military-Technical Agreement. Kosovo is an integral part of the Republic of Serbia, under the interim administration of the UN, and KFOR is the only legitimate armed formation on the territory of Kosovo and Metohija, with a clearly defined mandate," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement, Novosti.rs reports .
According to her, such movements have the potential to produce long-term security consequences and destabilize the situation in the Western Balkans.
"The Republic of Serbia sees this military alliance as a pressure factor and a security challenge for Serbia and the Serbian people in Kosovo. Our country remains committed to preserving peace, but at the same time sends a clear message that it will not allow its vital national and defense interests to be jeopardized," the statement said.
Serbia's Minister of European Integration, Nemanja Starovic, described the alliance as destabilization disguised as cooperation, calling it a scandalous provocation in the Balkans.
“Croatia and Albania, two NATO members, are openly building a military alliance with the so-called Kosovo, an entity that is not internationally recognized and is expressly prohibited by UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and international law from having an army. What is the real purpose, if not to surround, intimidate and threaten Serbia?” he added.
Starovic concluded that this reckless move, in his opinion, is deliberately destroying the fragile peace in the region.
Albania, Croatia and Pristina signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of defense and security on March 18, 2025 in Tirana.
But according to UN Security Council Resolution 1244, KFOR is the only armed force in Kosovo, Serbian media reports.
