During a meeting at the Heritage Foundation, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recalled that in this year, which marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the needs for an increase in spending and a stability of defense across the alliance.
The head of NATO emphasized that in order for it to face the great challenges of the moment, a more balanced division of the burden and an increase in defense production are needed.
A full-scale war is taking place in Europe, he recalled, and with China coming and strengthening its positions, more and more allies understand the value of standing together.
"For 40 years we contained the Soviet Union, and then suddenly it was gone. Then people said NATO should get out of the area, and we did, and we helped end two brutal ethnic wars in the Balkans: in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in Kosovo. And then, after the attack of September 11, NATO did something that no one predicted that we would do, and that was to be on the front lines of the war against terrorism and to help the United States," Stoltenberg said.
For more than 7 decades, NATO has served peace and stability, promoted democratic values, and played a key role in exploring ways to counter threats from adversaries.
After 2014, Stoltenberg said, the alliance managed to adapt again with an increased focus on collective defense in Europe and this is the reason why it is considered a success story.
