Trump's former envoy returns with accusations against the EU, while being praised by Vučić and silent about international justice in Kosovo...
Richard Grenell, Donald Trump's former special envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, has returned to his usual rhetoric; this time by directly accusing the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, of what he calls hypocrisy and silence on the injustice against Hashim Thaçi.
Grenell, now a figure increasingly linked to Serbian nationalist networks, uses his every move to reshape the narrative of international justice in the Balkans as an operation politically controlled by the EU.
Instead of talking about democratic progress in the region or dealing with the past, Grenell engages in personal attacks and attacks on top European Union officials.
In recent statements, he accused Von der Leyen of remaining silent on what he considers the unjust imprisonment of the former president of Kosovo. Without any new legal arguments, without references to decisions given or concrete procedures, Grenell demands that international opinion forget the alleged war crimes and focus on a personalized narrative of political victimization.
This is the rhetoric that has dominated since the beginning of Thaçi's trial in The Hague: justice as persecution, not as a necessary process to build lasting peace. When criticism of the EU comes from a former official who was decorated by Aleksandar Vučić with a high Serbian state order, everyone should ask: who serves whom?
It is incredible how easily Grenell speaks of double standards, while ignoring the independent positions of the Special Court, formed by the vote of the Kosovo Assembly. Instead of protecting Kosovo's interests, he shifts attention from Euro-Atlantic integration to dangerous games with radicalized American influence, which represents a segment of Trump's foreign policy, not official Washington policy.
Meanwhile, the EU is silent. Ursula von der Leyen has not responded to the accusations, and likely will not. But European silence should not be confused with weakness, it is a signal that the EU has no intention of entering into a war of words with diplomats frustrated by American domestic politics.
Kosovo needs partners who help it build a state, not spokespeople for individuals facing justice. Therefore, Grenell's defense of Thaçi is neither a defense of Kosovo nor an aid to peace. It is simply an instrumentalized voice that uses the Balkans as a stage for another power struggle, which has nothing to do with the future of Albanians./ Pamphlet
