New Kosovo Government, Kurti: I am ready to start talks on the President
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti declared on Thursday that he is ready to begin discussions with other parties on the presidential issue, starting tomorrow.

At the first meeting of the new government cabinet, Kurti emphasized that dialogue on this topic could begin immediately after the approval of the 4 billion euro budget and several international agreements.

"The lessons we have learned during the last mandate, together with your expertise and knowledge, make me believe that this cabinet has all the prerequisites to be the best cabinet. We have gathered since the first day of work to approve the international agreements that have been pending," Kurti said.

Meanwhile, the two opposition parties, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), have announced that this time they will not shirk responsibility for the presidential election process.

LDK Chairman Lumir Abdixhiku, who received the party's vote of confidence, stated that the election of the president requires political agreement, but not bargaining.

"When we talk about political agreements, we are not talking about political bargaining, we are talking about the parties having to sit down to do the numbers for a future president of Kosovo. So I am ready to talk to the entire political spectrum, to provide a solution to the very important issue of a president who will be consensual and will represent the national unity of Kosovo", he said, underlining that LDK is "committed to finding consensus".

Even the chairman of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, confirmed that the entity he leads is open to discussions with the Vetëvendosje Movement regarding the presidential issue.

"There is nothing wrong with talking, but the responsibility for getting the votes belongs to the first party. The first time, President Rugova gave the post of prime minister, which was held by Mr. Rexhepi, and he himself was president. The second time, he gave it to Mr. Haradinaj, and he himself was president. The third time, Mr. Sejdiu was elected with the support of PDK, and Mr. Thaçi was prime minister. However, PDK had the majority, but it took the prime minister and elected the president by political agreement," said Hamza.

According to media reports, debates around this issue appear to have influenced President Vjosa Osmani to cancel her participation in the Munich Security Conference.

The election of the president requires a qualified majority in the Assembly, which makes cooperation between political parties necessary to reach an agreement.
