Citizens in Kosovo's 38 municipalities voted on October 12 to elect new mayors and new municipal compositions.

The voting generally took place without incidents that could affect the process.

Based on the vote count so far, in 21 municipalities, citizens have elected local leaders in the first round, while in 17 others, a runoff round will take place.

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, is among the municipalities that will go to the runoff, when the LDK and LVV will face off.

In the first round, LVV and PDK won in three municipalities, LDK in two, AAK and Nisma won one municipality each, as did Ramiz Lladrovci with his list in Drenas.

The municipalities of South Mitrovica, Pristina, Vushtrri, Gjakova, Gjilan, Dragash, Kaçanik, Klina, Fushë Kosovë, Obliq, Rahovec, Peja, Prizren, Suhareka, Viti, Junik, Kllokot will go to the runoff.

The municipalities that managed to elect Albanian mayors in the first round are Podujevo, Ferizaj, Skenderaj, Hani i Elezit, Istog, Lipjan, Shtime, Kamenica and Deçan.

The Serbian List, the main Serb party in Kosovo, won the elections in the northern municipalities of North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok. The turnout in these elections was 39 percent.

The CEC said it expects to complete the counting of all votes within the week, for members of local assemblies, conditional votes, votes of people with special needs, and votes cast by mail.

The PDK suffered its most shocking blow in Drenas, where Ramiz Lladrovci won the race convincingly, receiving 52.31 percent of the vote. His PDK opponent, Petrit Hajdari, received only 37.31 percent of the vote, even though Drenas was known as a stronghold of this party.

Mitrovica went to a runoff, although all polls placed the PDK candidate as the winner with over 50 percent. The difference between PDK and LVV is only 28 votes, reports "Bota Sot".

First came Arian Tahiri from PDK with 15,368 votes or 47.89 percent, while LVV candidate Faton Peci received 12,340 votes or 47.80 percent.

This is expected to be one of the most interesting races in the runoff to be held on November 9th.

The head of the Central Election Commission, Kreshnik Radoniqi, said he believes that the vote counting process for the first round of local elections will be completed within a week. At a press conference, he announced that today, from 12:00, and in some places even at 16:00, municipal counting centers will begin counting votes for municipal assemblies in 38 municipalities.

Radoniqi said he expects this process to be concluded within "two or three days" and then to continue with the counting of conditional votes, of people with special needs and from the diaspora.

"We strongly believe that the counting process will be completed within this week," he said.

According to CEC data, 2,069,098 citizens had the right to vote.

Around 44,000 of them were able to vote by mail from abroad between September 17 and October 11.
