On the eve of the start of Africa's most popular international competition, CAF, the controversy involving the age of a player resurfaces. CAF, the governing body of African football, has called on Gabonese footballer Guelor Kanga to make a statement and explain to his governing body how he was born four years after his mother's death.

Kanga, who currently plays for Sërvena Zvezda in Serbia, was previously targeted in this unusual case. According to the documents presented by the Gabonese Football Federation, the attacking midfielder was born in Gabon on September 1, 1990 and is currently 33 years old.

However, in 2021, the DR Congo Federation sued their Gabonese counterparts for falsifying documents, claiming that Kanga was actually Kiaku-Kiaku Kianga, born in Kinshasa, DR Congo, on October 5, 1985.

This ambiguity was highlighted when the investigation concluded that the player's mother had died in early 1989, some four years after Kianga was supposed to have been born. In other words, instead of being 33 years old, the midfielder would be 37 years old.

Now, the investigation launched by CAF requires Guelor Kanga to appear before the committee and explain his part in the incident, and Gabon could be punished for falsifying documents, failing to comply with FIFA's player registration rules and, in thus, preventing participation in the 2025 and 2027 editions. Gabon has not qualified for the current edition, which begins on January 13.

With 64 appearances and three goals for Gabon, Guelor Kanga has been the starter. The incident calls into question the entire Gabonese Federation and CAF has the arduous task of investigating the facts.
