The first leg of the semi-final between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal ended in a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Both goals came from the penalty spot, leaving qualification for the return leg open.
The first half was characterized by a slow tempo and few scoring chances. For about 35 minutes, the teams failed to create any concrete danger on their respective goals.
Arsenal took the lead in the 44th minute, after the referee awarded a penalty for a tackle by David Hanko on Giokeres inside the area. Giokeres himself proved to be accurate from the spot, giving the Gunners a 0-1 lead.
In the second half, the Madrid team reacted and managed to equalize in the 56th minute. This goal also came from the penalty spot, with Julian Alvarez making no mistake in front of the goalkeeper, restoring the tie to 1-1.
The result leaves everything open for the return leg, which will be played in a week at the Emirates Stadium. It is this match that will determine the finalist team, which will fight for the trophy in the grand final on May 30 in Budapest.
