Neymar has admitted that he could end his professional career at the end of 2026, after a long period accompanied by physical problems that have affected his continuity on the field.
The 34-year-old striker, who currently plays for Santos, has stressed that his main goal remains to represent Brazil at next summer's World Cup. However, he has left open the possibility of a withdrawal, admitting that his future depends on his physical condition and developments in the coming months.
In December 2025, Neymar underwent knee surgery after a long period out of action due to a torn cruciate ligament. Frequent injuries have been a major factor in the latter stages of his career.
After returning to Santos, the club where he began his career, he has renewed his contract until the end of the calendar year and has expressed that he is enjoying football in his homeland again.
A return to the Brazilian national team remains a priority for the former Barcelona and PSG player. Neymar has not been capped by Brazil since October 2023, and has said that a final decision on his future will be made after another attempt to win the World Cup — a title that has eluded him throughout his career.
" I don't know what the future holds for me. It's possible that in December I want to quit football. This year is very important, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and for me ."
Neymar has explained that he has followed a careful recovery plan, missing several matches to avoid the risk of a recurrence of the injury.
" I wanted to come back 100% this season, and for that reason I took a few games off. I know a lot of people talk and don't understand the daily reality, but I have to face this. Santos has made a great plan for me. In the end I decided to take a break to come back without pain, without fear and in great shape ," he said.
The future of the Brazilian striker remains open, while the season and performance in the international arena are expected to be decisive for his final decision.
