Berat Gjimshiti celebrated his 33rd birthday on Thursday, a moment that has not gone unnoticed by the Atalanta club and the sports media in Italy. The Albanian defender is now considered one of the symbolic figures of the team from Bergamo, where he has been active since 2016.
For nearly a decade, Gjimshiti has become a reference point in Atalanta's defensive department. According to official data, he has played 319 matches in all competitions with the black and blue jersey, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.
These statistics rank him as the third most-capped player in the club's recent history, behind Maarten de Roon and Mario Pashalic. The Italian media describes him as a true "flagship" of Atalanta, due to his contribution and consistency over the years.
According to reports in Italy, a few months after lifting the Europa League trophy with Atalanta, Gjimshiti received a significant financial offer from Al Rayyan in Qatar.
The Middle Eastern club is said to have offered the Albanian defender a contract worth over 6 million euros net per season, to convince him to terminate his agreement with the Italians and transfer to the Qatari championship.
Media sources report that Atalanta gave the player complete freedom to decide on his future. In the end, Gjimshiti chose to stay in Bergamo, rejecting the financial offer and preferring to continue at the club he considers his sporting "home".
With his current contract expiring this summer, Gjimshiti is expected to face another important career decision. He will become a free agent, and it remains to be seen whether he will embark on a new adventure outside of Italy or choose to renew with Atalanta, in what could be the last contract of his career.
