Madonna, Shakira and BTS will perform at the World Cup final, as FIFA and IFAB announce a series of new rules aimed at increasing the pace of play and discipline on the pitch. ..

As the start of the 2026 World Cup approaches, FIFA has drawn attention with two important announcements: the organization of a historic show at halftime of the final and the approval of several changes to the tournament regulations.

Madonna, Shakira and BTS at the World Cup final

For the first time in World Cup history, FIFA will host a show at halftime of the final, following the model used for years at the NFL final in the United States. Until now, musical performances have mainly taken place during the opening ceremonies, while the break between halves was only used for player recovery and tactical instructions.

According to FIFA, Madonna, Shakira and BTS will headline the show. The performance will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey area. The artistic direction will be led by Coldplay's Chris Martin, while the production will be carried out by Global Citizen in collaboration with Done + Dusted and Live Nation.

Proceeds from the event will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, a fund that finances educational and development programs in around 200 countries, including the FIFA Football for Schools initiative.

New changes to the rules of the game

FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) have also announced a series of changes that will be implemented during the 2026 World Cup. According to reports, these measures are aimed at improving the pace of matches, discipline and decision-making on the pitch.

Among the changes mentioned are:

Players who cover their mouths with their hands or jerseys during an on-field argument can be punished with up to a red card, at the referee's discretion.

Any player who leaves the field in protest against the referee's decision may be immediately sent off with a red card.

Substituted players must leave the field within 10 seconds; otherwise, the player entering the game must wait one minute before being activated.

Goal kicks and throw-ins must be taken within five seconds, otherwise the ball passes to the opponent.

Footballers who receive medical treatment on the field must remain off the field for one minute before returning to play.

Only captains will have the right to approach the referees; other players may be punished with a yellow card.

Single yellow cards will be removed after the group stage and again after the quarter-finals.
UEFA does not implement all the changes

According to the source article, UEFA has decided not to enforce the rule of leaving the pitch in protest and the rule related to covering the mouth during arguments on the pitch. However, these measures will be part of the regulations for the 2026 World Cup.

New restrictions for fans in stadiums

FIFA has also announced changes to stadium entry rules. Fans will only be allowed to bring in transparent plastic, PVC or vinyl bags, with a maximum size of 12 x 6 x 12 inches.

The article also notes that FIFA plans to ban the display of pre-revolutionary Iranian flags, as well as clothing or other materials depicting them, following a practice similar to that used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
