The first leg of the Europa League playoff between Lille and Red Star Belgrade, won by the Serbian team, was marred by controversy off the pitch. During the match at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium, a group of Lille fans unfurled a banner in the stands depicting Kosovo as part of Serbia, accompanied by the message: " No to surrender ."
Images of the banner have been shared on social media, sparking reactions and debate. As of the time of publication of this news, there has been no official reaction from the French club or UEFA regarding the incident.
On the other hand, Crvena Zvezda reacted through a post on social media, where it thanked the Lille fans for the message displayed during the match. " Thank you–Merci! Lille fans unfurled a banner with the text 'No surrender' during the Europa League match ," the Serbian club's post said, accompanied by a photo of the banner.
UEFA regulations prohibit the display of messages with political content in stadiums, but it remains unclear whether European football's governing body will take any disciplinary action in relation to the case.
The incident has shifted attention away from the sporting aspect of the match, bringing into focus off-field issues that often accompany international confrontations.
