Italian referee scandal: Prosecutors expand investigation; five people charged

The investigation that is shaking up the Italian football refereeing system is widening. Currently, five people are under investigation, including Gianluca Rocchi, Andrea Gervasoni, Luigi Nasca, Stefano Di Vuolo and Matteo Paterna. According to ANSA, the number of people registered in the file could be higher, as some accusations of sports fraud are linked to collaboration with "multiple individuals".

There is a reported tense atmosphere at the Milan Prosecutor's Office, linked to the way the investigation has been managed by prosecutor Maurizio Ascione. So far, there has been no official communication on the matter, and since April 25, when the summons for Rocchi and Gervasoni arrived, the authorities have not issued a public statement.

Sources from the Prosecutor's Office have announced that Inter and the club's management are not under investigation. The people involved in the file are all connected to the world of refereeing. The investigation is focused on four or five matches, which do not belong to the current season.

Meanwhile, new details have emerged about what allegedly went on for years in the VAR room in Lissone. Former referee Pasquale De Meo told AGI that there was a “signal system” to communicate with VAR staff. According to him, the signals were set during weekly private meetings of the referees and were allegedly used to correct decisions considered incorrect.

De Meo, who has been out of the world of arbitration for two years, previously filed a similar complaint, which was dismissed in 2023 by the Federal Prosecutor's Office led by Giuseppe Chinè. At that time, the names of Gianluca Rocchi, Daniele Orsato and Paolo Valeri were also mentioned.

Rocchi, suspended from his duties as referee, has been summoned to appear before prosecutor Ascione. He can provide explanations for the investigation, but he also has the right to remain silent.
