A tense situation has erupted within the French national team just a few months before the 2026 World Cup. The French Football Federation (FFF) has asked Kylian Mbappe and the rest of the players to accept a reduction in the financial bonuses that were previously promised to them.
Under current agreements, each player on the French national team earns over 21,000 euros per match from image rights and promotional activities from sponsors. After the 4-0 win over Ukraine and securing qualification, this bonus was increased to around 42,000 euros per player, at the request of captain Kylian Mbappe and with the approval of FFF president Philippe Diallo.
However, just four months later, the Federation has reversed course and is now demanding a reduction in these benefits. This decision has surprised players, who consider the sudden change in financial policy unclear.
The FFF argues that the measure is related to the need to save and balance the budget across all national teams. But this explanation is viewed with skepticism, as the French national team continues to generate very high revenues, especially from the contract with main sponsor "Nike", which is worth over 100 million euros per year.
So far, the parties have not reached an agreement, while discussions are expected to continue during the next French national team training camp on May 28 in Clairefontaine.
