The German Football Association has ruled out the possibility of boycotting the World Cup after facing pressure to withdraw due to Donald Trump's policies.
" The DFB Executive Committee agrees that debates on sports policy should take place internally and not in public.
A boycott of the World Cup to be held in the USA, Mexico and Canada is not currently being considered. In preparation for the tournament, the DFB is in constant dialogue with representatives from politics, security, business and sport.
"We believe in the unifying power of sport and in the global impact that a football World Cup can have. Our aim is to strengthen this positive force, not to prevent it ," the German Football Association said in a statement.
Over the past two weeks, German media and politicians have discussed a possible boycott of the world's biggest sporting event following Trump's threats to impose tariffs on EU countries that oppose his plans to annex Greenland, which have now been withdrawn.
The World Cup is one of Trump's flagship projects, and the US president maintains close ties with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. A boycott by major European nations would paralyze the tournament.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos amid tensions over Greenland, Infantino sought to downplay political divisions, saying: " The world stands still because the World Cup and football really have an impact on people's lives, on their moods like nothing else. There's nothing like what football does. It changes the moods not only of people but of countries ."
Calls for a politically motivated boycott of mega-sporting events are not new. Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, media and politicians in several EU countries debated boycotting the event over the host country's treatment of migrant workers.
