Russia's election commission has said it has found signatures of people who are no longer alive among more than 100,000 signatures submitted by Boris Nadezhdin, the challenger to President Vladimir Putin, for next month's presidential election.
Nadezhdin, who has come out publicly against the war, risks being disqualified from the vote, which according to The Guardian means Putin's sure victory.
Although Nadezhdini has not been disqualified yet, at the Friday conference, the central election commission said in a conference that such a thing could happen very close to the election day.
On Monday, Nadezhdin was summoned to the commission to examine the case.
"There are mistakes (in Nadezhdin's signatures) that cause surprise. When we see dozens and dozens of people who do not live on the signature list, the ethical norms, including those of the signature gatherers, are called into question. To some extent, the candidate is directly involved," said Nikolai Bulayev, the deputy head of the state government agency.
