The trial for Gërdec goes to Fatmir Mediu court

The former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, went today to the session that will take place for Gërdec.

The last session was postponed due to the absence of two lawyers of the defendant, Fatmir Mediu. Henrik Ligori was not present due to health problems, while Ardian Visha is abroad.

GJKKO has agreed to call a total of 71 SPAK witnesses, including the son of the former prime minister, Shkëlzen Berisha, as well as a large number of defense witnesses.

At the initiative of Zamira Durda and other family members who lost their relatives in the explosion of Gërdec, SPAK reopened the investigation into the case. Zamira lost her 7-year-old son 

SPAK has filed charges against Fatmir Mediu, who is accused of "Misuse of duty" committed in cooperation, "Misuse of duty" in cooperation with a military subject-command cadre for the explosion in the weapons dismantling "factory" where 26 people were killed and injured hundreds more in 2008. 

How did the tragedy of Gërdec happen?

The explosion was so powerful that it destroyed 3,000 homes and businesses. A long and fierce "battle" is taking place between the families of the victims, the government and justice, based on mutual accusations between the parties. For this tragedy, the prosecution sent 28 defendants to court, among them Mihal Delijorgjin, president of the "Albademil" company, Ylli Pinari, director of the MEICO company and Dritan Minxholli, factory administrator, who have been released from prison after serving the respective sentences. . In February 2013, the Court of Appeal reduced by 1/3 the sentence given by the Court of Tirana for the three main defendants of the "Gërdeci" file. Fatmir Mediu himself, the chairman of the Republican Party, who was elected deputy in the April 25 elections as part of the lists of the Democratic Party, has repeatedly denied the accusations of his involvement in the "Gërdeci" case.
