The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime imposed the measure of "prison arrest" on Italian citizen Cosimo Notaristefano, detained as part of the SPAK operation against a call center suspected of financial fraud in one of Tirana's towers.
The police arrested Notaristefano at the Port of Durres, while he was leaving for Italy. At the hearing, he stated that he had been employed by this structure and that he provided technical services. According to him, he had no role in the investments of foreign citizens and was unaware of the suspected fraud scheme. He said that he did not know that he was wanted and that he traveled to Italy every two months.
Notaristefano also presented claims of health problems and requested the replacement of the security measure with a lighter measure, including a property guarantee. The court rejected the request and upheld the prison arrest.
Eight other people were arrested in the same operation, while three brothers, Agim, Alfred and Arjan Prekaj, have been declared wanted as suspected leaders of the scheme.
The investigation began after complaints from several Italian citizens who claimed to have been defrauded. According to the investigation, Albanian and Italian citizens were involved in the activity, while the alleged profits from the activity were transferred to cryptocurrencies and administered through virtual wallets controlled by the organizers.
