The National Association of Judges and the Association of Prosecutors of the Republic of Albania have reacted jointly after the referendum held in Italy on constitutional changes to the justice system, appreciating the role of Italian magistrates and emphasizing the importance of the independence of the system.
In their statement, the two associations express appreciation for the National Association of Italian Magistrates, which they believe contributed to fostering an open and responsible debate on the protection of constitutional principles. They emphasize that this commitment demonstrates an active justice system aware of its role in a democratic society.
The referendum in Italy ended with a "No" vote of 58.5%, while the turnout reached 58.9%. According to associations, this result constitutes a clear support for the independence of the judiciary and its guaranteeing role in the functioning of the rule of law.
The reaction notes that the Italian judiciary has shown stability and maturity in the face of challenges over the years, deserving the independence it enjoys, while its public engagement has strengthened the connection with citizens and trust in institutions.
Without mentioning it directly, the associations' message is also read as an appeal for the Albanian context, at a time when relations between the government and justice institutions have often been tense. The statement comes as Prime Minister Edi Rama has articulated strong criticism of the justice system and recently signals have been given about the possibility of similar referendum initiatives in Albania as well.
The associations emphasize that the justice system constitutes the “oxygen of the fundamental freedoms of citizens” and that its independence remains the cornerstone of any functional democracy. In this context, they underline that in Albania too, it remains the duty of institutions and every magistrate to increase public trust, guaranteeing the protection of constitutional rights and freedoms.
In conclusion, the associations express their commitment to strengthening the rule of law and the separation of powers, emphasizing that international experiences, such as the case of Italy, remain a reference for the development of an independent and efficient justice system.
