No trace of disposal, while Coca Cola Bottling Albania continues to generate waste that it doesn't even have a permit for...
Coca Cola is one of the most popular soft drinks in the world and since 1994, it has become an inseparable part of everyday life in our country. In these three decades, this multinational company has grown to become the undisputed leader in the Albanian lifestyle and also an important contributor to the country's economic growth.
As a result, it has also been the subject of important advertising spots in the main media, which have conveyed its successes to the public, such as a few months ago, for example, where Coca Cola Bottling Albania celebrated its 30th anniversary. But apart from the 30th anniversary celebrations, the year 2024 did not turn out so rosy for the company, because a report by the Albanian Supreme Audit Institution, based on an audit conducted by the company, revealed a scandal of a series of irregularities.
The report has shown in detail that the procedure for the disposal of expired beverages for 2020 lacks a regular disposal report, as it was signed only by the AKU inspectors, excluding those from the Environment and Taxes, who, according to the law, should have signed the report. Another concern raised by the SAI is the lack of photos of the place where the products were destroyed and the receipt of expired products from the warehouse. Extremely important elements, the absence of which calls into question the fact whether these expired beverages were really destroyed and if not, where did they end up?
We may never get an answer to this question, but what we will explain to you now is how this company should manage and dispose of its waste. Based on the 2015 environmental permit of the Coca Cola company, this entity generates a variety of waste, starting from paper, cardboard, plastic packaging, to sludge from the water treatment plant, which are categorized with these codes, and which must be disposed of off-site by licensed operators. However, this only concerns the codes that Coca Cola declares to generate according to the environmental permit, which we showed you above, but in reality the company does not generate only the aforementioned waste.
On May 15, 2024, Coca Cola Bottling Albania requested to dispose of two types of waste: activated carbon with the code 19 09 04 and sludge with the code 19 02 06, waste that is not reflected on any page of the permit, even though the company describes in the request that it generates them in quantities: 3 tons of carbon once every two years and 24 tons of sludge twice a month.
It's good that it generates it without a permit, in serious violation of the law, but the most important question: where does this waste end up?
In a response from the National Environment Agency, we learn that the disposal of these two codes in Albania is carried out only by these entities: Alb Tech Plast, Brema, KAKS Shpk, Tirana Business and Vlora Alumin, which, after our inquiry, categorically stated that they have no contractual relationship for waste disposal with Coca Cola. The Ministry of Tourism and Environment also explains that no request has been submitted by this entity for waste export during the period 2022-2024.
