Ports have been a strong electoral weapon in the 2021 elections for Edi Rama. He promised tourist ports in Durrës, Vlora, Saranda, etc. Meanwhile, a project was drafted for the Port of Durrës to be built in Porto Romano.
In the current campaign, the leader of the majority, namely the country's prime minister, has only briefly spoken about part of this argument, when presenting the program's milestones. This document states that the port of Porto Romano is in talks for financing, where it is emphasized that there are negotiations with NATO for part of it to be used as a military port of the Alliance.
Meanwhile, not a word is said about the so-called tourist ports, where so much noise was made about the Alabar project in Durrës.
These days, the government of the United Arab Emirates approved an agreement with the government of Montenegro to grant Muhamed Alabar a full 9 units of Ulcinj's Great Beach for 99 years.
An agreement that is completely different from that of the Port of Durres, as its guarantee has been taken over by the state, namely the government of the Emirates.
Meanwhile, regarding the Durrës Industrial Port, the issue is also complicated, not only due to an ambiguity regarding the issue of the NATO agreement, which itself has been questioned by the Americans, but also by another fact.
For some time now, China has been seeking to invest and participate in the Port of Durres. The world's leading economic power, which already has two ports in Greece, the most important of which is Piraeus, is seeking to extend its presence to Albania. The fact that China's position has been made public shows that this is an act that has been discussed through diplomatic channels between Beijing and Tirana.
In the document distributed also in Albanian by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Tirana, it is emphasized: "The Port of Durres is one of the greatest opportunities for potential investments from China, which has shown interest in the management and expansion of ports. This port can be transformed into a logistics center for the transport of goods and as a main link between China and Southeast Europe."
Specifically, China considers the port of Durres more important than that of Piraeus, which it has owned for years, to the extent that it emphasizes that it will be the "main gateway for the connection between China and Southeast Europe", not just for the Balkans. It seems that we are dealing with an argument that has not only been discussed, and according to the likelihood, may have gone even further. But why is Edi Rama hiding it?
