The US Treasury Department is considering the possibility of producing a commemorative one-dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, which will be celebrated on July 4, 2026.
This initiative comes as part of a series of national events to celebrate the Declaration of Independence in 1776. According to drafts published on Platform X and reprinted by the Treasury Department, the proposed coin will feature Trump's profile on one side along with the word "LIBERTY" engraved in large letters.
On the other hand, the president will appear with his fist raised in front of an American flag, along with the phrase "FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT", a famous slogan used by Trump during a speech after the assassination attempt on him in July 2024, in the middle of the presidential campaign.
These initial designs were confirmed by Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach, who stated in X that more details will be released once the current fiscal paralysis that has hit the federal government ends, referring to the temporary closure of institutions due to budget disputes.
However, the Treasury Department has not yet provided an official comment on the project, although Agence France-Presse (AFP) has requested confirmation. This initiative is based on a bipartisan law passed by Congress in 2020 and signed by Trump himself, which authorizes the issuance of commemorative $1 coins for 2026.
Critics have called this an "ego-trip" or a step towards a "banana republic," seeing it as an excessive homage to the figure of the current president, while supporters see it as a symbol of America's revival.
Meanwhile, the United States is preparing for a major national holiday in 2026, with activities across the country, starting with a countdown launched on July 4, 2025 by the U.S. Mint. If approved, the coin would be produced for a one-year period starting in January 2026.
