A missile launched by Iran that entered Turkish airspace has been destroyed by NATO air defense systems, while Turkish authorities state that the country was not the target of the attack.
A Turkish official told the AFP news agency that according to preliminary assessments, the missile was not targeting Turkey, but was suspected to have been headed towards a base in Greek Cyprus.
"We believe it was targeting a base in Greek Cyprus, but it went off course," the Turkish official said.
According to the same sources, the missile was intercepted over Turkish airspace and neutralized in the air by NATO air defense systems.
Meanwhile, authorities in Ankara have stated that Turkey reserves the right to react to any action that may pose a threat to its security, although in this case it is assessed that the country was not a direct target of the missile.
