US President Donald Trump confirmed today that his administration is making immediate decisions on the new leadership of Venezuela, following the overthrow of Nicolás Maduro. In an interview with Fox News, Trump declared that anyone who chooses to remain loyal to Maduro “has a very bad future,” warning of serious consequences for the remaining figures of the Chavista regime.
He said Washington's attention is currently focused on the opposition and in particular on Maria Corina Machado, one of the most vocal opponents of the former regime and banned from running for office for years. Machado is seen as a possible name to lead the country in transition.
Trump also revealed that Nicolás Maduro and his wife are aboard a US warship and are being transported to New York, where they face indictments previously filed by the US Department of Justice, including charges of narco-terrorism and international drug trafficking. Their arrest and extradition to the US has been confirmed as part of a broad international operation.
The US president added that the US will be heavily involved in Venezuela's oil industry, a sector that has been in crisis for years due to mismanagement and international sanctions. He did not provide further details on the forms of involvement, but underlined that this sector is vital to the country's economic reconstruction.
Speaking about the military operation that led to the overthrow and arrest of Maduro, Trump confirmed that there were some injuries among US forces, but there were no casualties. He added that he will hold a formal press conference at 11:00, where he is expected to provide more information on the plan for Venezuela's political future and the United States' next steps in the region.
