The British government does not rule out the use of electronic bracelets to control immigrants who come to the UK illegally.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman told Sky News that she is prepared to use a "range of options" in dealing with the issue of migrants crossing the Channel in small boats.
Braverman's statement comes after a report in The Times said the Home Office is considering fitting asylum seekers arriving in the UK with unauthorized devices and electronic bracelets.
The British daily said officials are looking at it as a way to stop the disappearance of migrants who cannot be accommodated in detention centres.
“We have just passed landmark legislation in the form of our Illegal Immigration Act – empowering us to detain those who arrive here illegally and then quickly remove them to a safe country like Rwanda.
This will require a power to stop and ultimately control those people. We need to exercise a level of control if we want to get them out of the UK and we are looking at a number of options to get them here.
The UK has an existing removal capacity of several thousand detention cells. We will be working intensively to increase that, but obviously we are looking at a range of options – all options – to ensure that we have that level of people control to deter those who might flow through our system quickly" - said Braverman.
Ms Braverman acknowledged that the British government may need to provide more detention places while it awaits the outcome of legal challenges against the Rwandan scheme.
“If we are successful [in court], we will operationalize our police. If the courts stop us, we will do whatever it takes to make sure we stop the ships. This is a promise of the prime minister, it is a promise that I have made and we are working day and night to fulfill it" - said Braverman.

E vetmja mënyrë efektive për të ndalur këtë problem është thyerja e modelit të grupeve të kontrabandës me njerëz përmes përgjimeve në rrjedhën e sipërme, por edhe me parandalues dhe sigurimin që ata që tentojnë këtë udhëtim në radhë të parë do të penalizohen dhe do të përballen me pasoja si p.sh. largimi nga Mbretëria e Bashkuar”.
Justin Madders, ministri në hije i punësimit kritikoi refuzimin e Braverman për të përjashtuar vendosjen e byrzylykëve elektronik, duke thënë: “Të vetmëve njerëz të cilëve iu vendosen ato janë kriminelët, por nga sa kuptoj unë, njerëzit që vijnë në këtë vend duke kërkuar azil nuk janë kriminelë.”
