This is what CNN writes after Viktor Orban admitted defeat in the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
Following Vice President JD Vance's open attempt to support Orbán during a trip to Budapest last week, Trump offered economic support for Hungary's struggling economy if Orbán requested it.
"My administration is ready to use the full economic power of the United States to strengthen the economy of Hungary, as we have done for our great allies in the past, if Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian people ever need it," Trump wrote on Social Truth on Friday.
"We are excited to invest in the future prosperity that will be generated by Orbán's continued leadership!" Trump added.
Trump's promise of economic support seemed at odds with statements Vance made during his stop in Budapest. Seeking to counter claims that his visit amounted to the kind of foreign election interference that he and Orbán alleged was being carried out against the Hungarian leader by the European Union and Ukraine, Vance said the US was not using "economic influence" to sway the vote.
"Foreign influence is when other governments threaten, entice and try to use economic influence to tell you how to vote," Vance said, denying that this was his goal in Budapest.
"We have never threatened Hungary by saying, 'If you don't vote for Viktor Orbán, you won't get this or that.' We would never do that, because we respect the Hungarian people enough to respect their sovereignty," Vance said.
In a previous press conference, Vance said "of course the Trump administration would cooperate with whoever wins the Hungarian election."
"But Viktor Orbán will win the next elections in Hungary," he insisted.
