US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke at the G7 summit in Canada. He said there was a "positive interaction" between White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin, who met in Moscow yesterday.
He said that once Witkoff returns, the team will take a closer look at the Russian position and Donald Trump will determine next steps.
“I think there are reasons to be cautiously optimistic. But by the same token, we continue to acknowledge that this is a difficult and complex situation ,” he said.
Asked if he trusts Putin, Rubio notably refuses to answer directly, saying he thinks it's "an irrelevant question."
" Foreign policy is not about trust, but about actions. In the end, for something like this, you can't just say you want peace, you have to make peace, and that's true for both sides in any conflict," he added.
Rubio further said that both sides will have to make concessions in their talks to end the war in Ukraine.
" This will have to be part of the negotiations, but it will not be helpful to enter those negotiations by making general statements that could provide an excuse for one or the other side not to participate in it ," he added.
