US President Donald Trump used the memorial service for Charlie Kirk to announce a surprise announcement on autism that he plans to make on Monday.
Trump was the final speaker at Kirk's emotional farewell ceremony at State Farm Stadium in Arizona on Sunday afternoon.
One by one, administration officials and Kirk's wife, Erika, shared heartfelt tributes to the late conservative activist, who was killed on September 10, and shared inspirational messages to the crowd of 200,000.
When Trump approached the podium to speak, he strayed into uncharted territory with a political message, revealing that he planned to make an announcement from the Oval Office on Monday, which he believed Kirk would have eagerly awaited.
"I think you're going to find it amazing, I think we found a cure for autism," Donald Trump told the crowd.
Trump vowed that his administration "will not let it happen again."
"I think it's going to be one of the most important press conferences I'll ever have, and I'm really looking forward to it," Trump said.
Earlier on Sunday, reports suggested that Trump planned to announce that pregnant women should avoid taking Tylenol unless they have a fever due to the increased risk.
The advice comes from a federal review into what is driving the rise in autism rates across the US, an initiative led by Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.
Officials also plan to advertise a drug called leucovorin as a potential treatment for the neurodevelopmental disorder, according to the Washington Post report.
