US President Donald Trump's administration has decided to significantly reduce proposed tariffs on Italian pasta imports, withdrawing a plan that risked leading to steep price increases for US consumers.
Initially, the US Department of Commerce had warned of tariffs of up to 91.74% on pasta produced by 13 Italian companies, accusing them of selling at prices below normal market value, a practice known as "dumping".
Given that a basic tariff of 15% is already applied to products from the European Union, the total taxation would have exceeded 100% of the product value.
However, the Italian Foreign Ministry announced that the US has revised its position, describing this as a recognition of the constructive cooperation of Italian companies.
