Egypt calls on Israel to withdraw from Gaza and reopen Rafah border crossing

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called on Sunday for Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and reopen the Rafah border crossing, in line with last year's ceasefire agreement.

The call was made during a meeting in Cairo between Abdelatty and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, where bilateral relations and regional developments were discussed, foreign media report.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the two diplomats discussed ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, as well as developing political and economic cooperation. Discussions also focused on the situation in Gaza, Sudan, the Horn of Africa region, and Egypt's water security issues.

Abdelatty also welcomed Egypt's membership in US President Donald Trump's "Peace Board." This board is an international organization that aims to promote stability, restore good governance and the rule of law, and achieve lasting peace in conflict-affected areas.

The Egyptian minister stressed the importance of implementing the obligations of the second phase of Trump's plan for Gaza, supporting the establishment of a national committee to administer the territory, and the rapid deployment of an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire.

He also underlined the need for the reopening of the Rafah crossing in both directions and for Israel's complete withdrawal from Gaza, stressing that these steps are essential to pave the way for the early recovery and reconstruction of the territory.

Meanwhile, Israel's Army Radio reported that Washington has reached an understanding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reopen the Rafah crossing, which is considered a vital artery for the distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza. According to the Israeli news site Walla, the border crossing is expected to open later this week.
