A federal jury in the US has ruled against Elon Musk in his lawsuit against OpenAI, dismissing claims that the artificial intelligence company had deviated from its original mission to act for the benefit of humanity.
The unanimous verdict was handed down Monday in Oakland federal court, where the jury concluded that Musk had filed the case too late.
The trial, which began on April 28, was considered a key moment for the debate over the future of artificial intelligence, its use, and the financial benefits associated with this technology.
Musk accused OpenAI of abandoning its non-profit nature and favoring investors and company executives over safety and the public interest. He also claimed that Microsoft had been aware of OpenAI's for-profit orientation from the beginning.
On the other hand, OpenAI argued that Musk himself had been motivated by financial interests and that he had unfairly delayed the lawsuit.
"Mr. Musk may have the Midas touch in some areas, but not in artificial intelligence," OpenAI attorney William Savitt said during closing arguments.
During 11 days of testimony, lawyers for both sides questioned the credibility of Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Musk's lawyer, Steven Molo, told the jury that several witnesses had questioned Altman's sincerity. "Sam Altman's credibility is directly in question. If you don't trust him, they can't win," he declared.
OpenAI currently competes with companies like Anthropic and Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI. The company is also preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), which could reportedly value it at around $1 trillion.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has invested over $100 billion in its partnership with OpenAI, according to testimony from a company executive during the trial.
