Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has declared that any military intervention by the United States against Cuba would bring "bloodshed" and unpredictable consequences for regional stability.
"Cuba does not represent a threat," Díaz-Canel wrote on the X platform.
The statement came after the American portal Axios, citing classified intelligence information, reported that Cuba had purchased over 300 military drones and had discussed using them against the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, US military ships and the Key West area in Florida.
Cuban authorities rejected these claims, accusing Washington of creating a pretext for a possible military intervention.
In Havana, some citizens said they would resist any attack, despite the severe economic crisis the country is experiencing.
“I know Cuba is a strong country. The Cubans are very brave and they will not find us unprepared,” said Sandra Roseaux, 57. “If they come, they will have to fight, because Cuba will respond.”
Relations between Havana and Washington have been strained in recent weeks. Reuters reported earlier, citing a US Justice Department source, that prosecutors were preparing charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 downing of two planes operated by a humanitarian organization.
Such an action against 94-year-old Raúl Castro, Fidel Castro's brother and central figure of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, would be considered a major escalation of American pressure on Cuba.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated that Cuba, "like any other state," has the right to self-defense under the UN Charter and international law.
Some Havana residents called for a reduction in tensions and negotiations between the two countries.
"It would not be right for the US to invade Cuba, nor for Cuba to attack the US. They should talk and reach an agreement," said Ulises Medina, 58.
The economic crisis on the island has deepened in recent months. Fuel shortages and power outages have become common, with many areas only receiving power for a few hours a day.
