Iran's armed forces issued a statement on Thursday morning in which they denied that they had launched a ballistic missile towards Turkey the day before.
"We respect the territorial integrity of Turkey. It is a friendly and neighboring country," the statement said.
The reaction of Iranian authorities came about 24 hours after it was reported that an Iranian missile had been launched towards Incirlik Air Base in Turkey and was intercepted by NATO forces.
According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, the missile was shot down by NATO forces as it approached Turkish airspace. The North Atlantic Alliance condemned the incident, calling it an attack on Turkey.
Incirlik Air Base is located in southern Turkey, near the Mediterranean Sea, and has served as an important operations center for the United States Air Force for years.
Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, on Wednesday to discuss the situation and the latest developments regarding the incident.
