Lebanon was hit by a new wave of Israeli airstrikes, leaving at least 52 people dead and 154 wounded, according to a toll released by the Lebanese government. The strikes spread across several areas of the country, in one of the bloodiest days of the latest conflict.
Israel said it had struck Hezbollah targets after the Iran-backed group fired several projectiles at a military base in northern Israel. The Israeli military described the operation as a response to previous attacks.
The situation remains tense along the border, as airstrikes and gunfire have displaced civilians and damaged infrastructure in several regions of Lebanon. Local authorities report increased pressure on hospitals and emergency services.
The escalation is not limited to Lebanon. In Iraq, Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein said more than 70 missiles and drones had hit the northern city of Erbil, while other attacks were reported in the south and west. In a conversation with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Hussein said Iraq had “become a victim of this war” and was being attacked by “various parties involved in the conflict.”
Earlier in the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani ordered security agencies to confront "any act that undermines the security and stability" of the country.
On Sunday, the pro-Iranian militia "Popular Mobilization Forces" in Iraq announced that four of its members were killed in US-Israeli strikes that targeted one of its headquarters in the east of the country.
Developments indicate that the conflict is taking on regional dimensions, with open fronts in Lebanon and Iraq, while tensions between Israel, the US and Iranian-backed groups are deepening. The situation remains unstable and at risk of spreading further in the Middle East.
