US President warns Tehran he will target "energy production" targets if it threatens global supply
US President Donald Trump says the US has held off on striking certain electricity-producing sites in Iran, but will do so if the Islamic Republic does not cooperate.
"We've left some of the most important targets for later, in case we have to hit them," Trump says during a press conference in Florida regarding the war against Iran.
"If we hit those targets, it's going to take many years for them to be rebuilt. The targets are about electricity generation and many other things. We're not looking to do this unless it's necessary," Trump says.
Getting more specific about when he would be willing to target power generation sites, Trump says: "I will not allow a terrorist regime to hold the world hostage and try to cut off the world's oil supply. If Iran does anything to do that, they will be hit at a much more severe level. I will destroy those targets... that I mentioned a little while ago."
"We're going to destroy them so quickly that they'll never be able to recover. If they want to play that game, they better not play that game," Trump says.
He argues that war will neutralize the threat that Iran poses to global shipping and oil supplies. "The result will be lower oil prices, lower oil and gas prices for American families."
"During this brief interruption, the United States is providing political risk insurance to every tanker operating in the Gulf," Trump announced, adding that the US is also waiving some oil-related sanctions to lower prices.
"When the time comes, the U.S. Navy and its partners will escort tankers through the strait if necessary," Trump says.
"We are well ahead of our original deadline," he claims.
The president reiterates that he wants to be involved in selecting Iran's next leader.
"We don't want another president who probably wouldn't be willing to do what I'm willing to do - for the good of the world, for the good of our nation. We don't want to be stuck with the situation five years from now or ten years from now," Trump says.
He claims that Iran during previous rounds of nuclear talks essentially refused to give up building a nuclear weapon while insisting on retaining the right to enrich uranium to high levels.
After the US struck Iran's nuclear sites last year, Tehran sought to build a new site protected by granite, Trump claims, adding that the regime also accelerated missile production during that period.
Iran's behavior prior to Operation Epic Fury " was rapidly approaching the point of no return, and the United States found it intolerable," Trump declared.
