Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died in prison, ending a years-long fight against corruption and the Kremlin that saw him survive several poisoning attempts.

A prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, Navalny died aged 47 as he spent his final months behind bars.

Nicknamed the "Polar Wolf", the prison where Navalny was recently confined is located above the Arctic Circle and is described as a "special regime colony", with temperatures in the region dropping to -30C in winter.

The sights you see below are located so far on the outskirts of civilization that it makes it almost impossible for visitors to reach the place.

Navalny was transported to the prison from his previous incarceration in the Melekhovo colony, roughly four hours from Moscow, where he had served a two-year sentence. During his time in prison he suffered from health problems, possibly as a result of Novichok poisoning, for which he sought life-saving treatment in the West.

Reporting debilitating back pain, stomach pains and numbness in his legs, the opposition politician was denied access to medication, medicine and subjected to hourly checks through the night. On January 22, the Kremlin critic explained how prison guards often woke everyone up at 5 a.m. to sing the Russian national anthem.

" And right after that - the second most important song in the country: Shaman's 'Ya Russky,'" he said, a song that translates to "I'm Russian" and has become an unofficial anthem of Vladimir Putin. However, his humor and charisma were still evident in December, when he gave an overview of the 1,200-mile (1,930 km) journey from Melekhovo to Kharp.

"My 20 days of transportation were pretty exhausting, but I'm still in good spirits, as befits a Santa ," he joked.
