Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that Russia is ready to play any role in negotiations between the United States and Iran, after meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, in Moscow.
" We are ready to assist, mediate and play any role that - from Iran's point of view - would be necessary and acceptable to the United States of America. We proceed from the fact that the only option for an agreement ... is an agreement specifically on nuclear issues, as a baseline ," Lavrov said.
Araqchi stated that the message from Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, to Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is "to send a signal to the whole world that Iran considers Russia as its strategic partner and an important neighbor."
" I can confirm that the positions and approaches of Iran and Russia throughout history have never been closer and more similar than today ," he added.
Italy will also mediate the next round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, which will take place in Rome, confirmed Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
"We had a request from the interested parties, from Oman which is playing the role of mediator, and we gave a positive response. Rome is confirmed as a capital of peace and mediation. We will continue to support all negotiations that can lead to the resolution of the nuclear issue, but also to the building of peace ," Tajani said.
