Political stalemate in North Macedonia, Pendarovski: Disapproval of

The President of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, said on Tuesday that disapproval of the constitutional changes "will cost another decade" to the European integration of this country.

The constitutional changes for the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in its preamble, as a state-forming people, are foreseen with what is known as the "French proposal" for the resolution of the dispute with Bulgaria on issues related to the Macedonian language and identity.

But, due to the lack of consensus between the government and the opposition, these changes were not approved and North Macedonia did not receive consent for the start of talks at the last EU summit.

By postponing the constitutional changes, we will lose another opportunity that could cost us at least another decade of integrations, which means less economic progress, higher standards bad things for the citizens and greater emigration", said Pendarovski in the annual speech before the deputies.

However, Pendarovski said that North Macedonia "must stay on the path of European integration, regardless of which executive power will be at the head of the country, after the May 2024 elections, or despite the blockades from Bulgaria".

"But, of course, it is not in our strategic interest to make an enemy of Bulgaria, because it is in our interest to have a stable environment and productive cooperation with all our neighbors", said President Pendarovski.

He also spoke about the fight against organized crime and corruption that has not yielded the expected results, which was highlighted in the Progress Report of the European Commission, but also in the numerous reactions from the United States.

No law can change the reality, if the only criterion for employment is clientelism and party nepotism. The impression is that the USA and the EU are more diligent fighters against corruption than our institutions," the head of state said.

He devoted part of his speech to the murder of 14-year-old Vanja Gjorgjevska, but also to various inciting calls on social networks.

"Unfortunately, the entire social system has failed, because the misunderstood democratic pluralism has not prevented these individuals from polluting the public space even more", said Pendarovski.

As for foreign policy, the president of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, spoke about the fighting in Gaza, justifying the action of the Israeli army against, as he said, the "terrorist group Hamas".

The position is clear, Hamas is a terrorist organization and the time has come to confirm this with an official decision. Israel has the right to self-defense. But human rights must also be taken into account. The most important thing for us is that all political subjects act responsibly in relation to that conflict so as not to deepen divisions in the multi-ethnic society," said Pendarovski./REL
