The 'noose' narrows for Netanyahu, the UN Human Rights Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council will consider a draft resolution on Friday calling for an arms embargo on the Israeli occupation, citing "the potential risk of genocide in Gaza".

If the draft resolution is adopted, it would be the first time that the UN Human Rights Council takes a position on "Israeli" aggression against Gaza.

It calls on countries to stop the sale or transfer of weapons, ammunition and other military equipment to "Israel", citing "a credible risk of genocide in Gaza".

The draft condemns "Israel's use of explosive weapons with wide effects" in populated areas of the Gaza Strip and demands that the Israeli occupation "uphold its legal responsibility to prevent genocide".

The resolution was brought by Pakistan on behalf of 55 of the 56 UN member states in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) - the only exception being Albania. It is co-sponsored by Bolivia, Cuba and the Palestinian mission in Geneva.

It also demands that "Israel" end its occupation of Palestinian territory and immediately lift the "illegal blockade" imposed on the Gaza Strip.

The draft also "condemns the use of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare", calls for an immediate ceasefire and "condemns Israeli actions that may amount to ethnic cleansing".
