Swedish authorities have prevented a terrorist attack against Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson.
"We have learned that several planned terrorist attacks have been prevented, " Christerson said at a news conference, without elaborating.
Earlier, the security agency 'SAPO' announced it was raising the threat level against the country from level three to level four on a five-point scale, as international tension rose over the burning of copies of the Koran at protests in the Scandinavian country.
"The threat against Sweden has gradually changed and the threat of attacks by violent Islamists has increased during the year," the security agency announced.
According to 'SAPO', while Sweden was previously considered a legitimate target for terrorist attacks, it is now considered a priority target.
"I decided today to raise the terrorist threat level from elevated to critical," Swedish intelligence chief Charlotte von Essen told a news conference, adding that she believed the threat of attacks would last for a long time in the country.
