Israeli forces have uncovered 800 tunnels and bunkers used by Hamas militants since the ground operation in Gaza began on October 27.
As the Israeli army announced on Sunday, it has already destroyed more than half.
"The tunnel entrances were located in civilian areas, many of which were located near or inside buildings such as schools, gardens, mosques and playgrounds," the IDF statement said.
According to the statement, of the approximately 800 tunnels and bunkers discovered, 500 have been destroyed by various operational methods, including "blasting and sealing". The statement also said that "several miles" inside the tunnel have been destroyed.
It is noted that the Palestinian Islamic group said before the war that it had hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, a network comparable in scope to the New York subway system, for defense and for use as a base of operations.
This made the tunnels prime targets for aerial bombardment, with armor-piercing munitions and army engineers using mapping robots or explosive devices that could be detonated in the passages.
