The Russian atomic energy agency Rosatom is working on "the creation of advanced weapons capable of maintaining the strategic balance in the world."
This is what Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced, quoted by the Ria Novosti agency.
"It is a pleasure that today the staff of Rosatom, employees of specialized companies and research centers are improving the wonderful traditions of their ancestors.
They are actively solving problems related to the introduction of innovative technologies in the energy and space sectors, in nuclear medicine, ecology and in the modernization of the nuclear fleet of icebreakers. They participate in the creation of advanced weapons capable of maintaining the strategic balance in the world.
It is important to continue the path of deepening international cooperation, expanding mutually beneficial contacts with conscientious and reliable partners abroad," Putin said in his congratulatory speech to nuclear industry workers.
In turn, Vladimir Putin has instructed his government to ensure stable retail fuel prices, eyeing additional measures to balance the domestic market after banning gasoline and diesel exports.
He stressed that the government must act immediately and that revising taxes on the oil industry is an option.
Russia, the world's third-largest oil producer, has faced shortages of gasoline and diesel in recent months.
Wholesale fuel prices rose, even as retail prices were cut in an effort to bring them in line with the official inflation rate.
Shortages have been particularly painful in parts of southern Russia, where fuel is vital for harvesting crops.
A serious crisis could be uncomfortable for the Kremlin as presidential elections in March approach. The government last Thursday introduced a temporary ban on gasoline and oil exports to all countries (except the four former Soviet republics) to prevent a surge of domestic fuel prices.
While prices initially fell on the domestic commodity exchange, they started to rise again when the easing of restrictions was announced over the weekend.
