Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for restraint after reports of ceasefire violations. Sharif said ceasefire violations have been reported in several places across the conflict zone, which he said undermine the spirit of the peace process.
"I sincerely and earnestly call on all parties to exercise restraint and respect the two-week ceasefire, as agreed, so that diplomacy can take a leading role towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict," he said in a post on X on Wednesday.
Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator between the US and Iran in recent weeks. Sharif has invited delegations from Iran and the US to Islamabad for talks on Friday. Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner and Vice President JD Vance are expected to attend.
Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, said the ceasefire reached overnight was the result of "an intense diplomatic effort."
He would not provide details on the points of discussion for Friday's talks, saying he believes the success of this process will depend on secrecy.
" The parties to the conflict should be given sufficient space without any pressure, outside external pressures. Ultimately, it is up to them to make decisions and reach whatever agreement they want to reach. Pakistan is only a facilitator and we are trying to do this with all seriousness and loyalty ," he said.
