The Russian Foreign Ministry calls the incident a serious violation of diplomatic conventions.
Russia reacted sharply after its consulate in the Iranian city of Isfahan was damaged during attacks that hit the area earlier this week.
According to Reuters, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the consulate building was damaged during an attack targeting the provincial governor's office, which is located next to the diplomatic mission.
Zakharova stressed that attacks on diplomatic missions constitute a clear violation of international conventions and urged all parties to respect the inviolability of diplomatic facilities.
"On March 8, in the Iranian city of Isfahan, as a result of an attack on the administration of the governor of the province of the same name located nearby, the Russian consulate was also damaged," the statement published by the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Russian authorities called for full respect for international rules that guarantee the protection of diplomatic missions, as tensions in the region continue to rise following recent attacks and counterattacks.
