Tensions in the Middle East increase military presence, German frigate arrives

The German frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen has arrived in the port of Limassol, joining the growing number of international military vessels that have been deployed to Cyprus due to tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The deployment of the German ship comes after the Cypriot government announced earlier this week that Berlin would contribute to preventive measures to protect the island, following an incident on Monday when an Iranian-made drone struck Cypriot territory.

Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced that the decision came after communication between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to him, following this political contact, the leaders of the two countries' armed forces also held talks at the operational level to coordinate actions.

The deployment of the German frigate is part of a broader military mobilization by NATO and European Union countries in the region. Earlier this week, the French frigate Languedoc arrived in waters near Cyprus.

French President Emmanuel Macron has also announced that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will be deployed to the eastern Mediterranean to strengthen the military presence in the region.

Meanwhile, other European countries have also announced military support for Cyprus. Italy is expected to send the frigate Federico Martinengo, while Spain has announced that it will deploy the frigate Cristóbal Colón.

These developments indicate an increase in international military presence in the eastern Mediterranean, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
