Draghi warns Europe: The risk of division, loss of autonomy and deindustrialization is real

Europe risks becoming divided, dependent on others and deindustrialized, warned former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi, during a ceremony in Belgium where he was awarded the title of doctor honoris causa.

His speech focused on the challenges of the European Union in a world where the global order is collapsing and pressure from great powers is increasing every day.

" Among all those squeezed between the United States and China, only the Europeans have the option to become a real power. We must decide: do we remain just a big market, subordinate to the priorities of others, or do we take steps to make Europe a strategic power? " Draghi said.

According to Draghi, to achieve the status of a power, Europe cannot remain just a confederation of states, but must move into a federation. He recalled that when Europe has been integrated, as in the single market, competition, monetary policy and trade agreements, it has been respected and negotiated as a single actor. The most recent examples are the agreements with India and Latin America, where the European Union has shown the strength of a unified entity.

Draghi also warned of the dangers of a collapsing global order. “ The collapse of this order is not in itself a threat; it would be painful to have less trade and weaker rules. But the real threat is what will replace that order ,” he stressed.

The former European Council president added that the United States sees the fragmentation of Europe as beneficial to its interests, while China is imposing its growth model by imposing the costs on others. “ European integration is not built on force, but on shared will; not on subjugation, but on shared benefit ,” Draghi said.

His statement came just days before an informal summit on European competitiveness, where he and former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta will discuss the challenges of the single market and ways to preserve the EU's competitiveness and unity. European Council President Antonio Costa described the meeting as an opportunity to share the strategic vision for a strong and united Europe, in a world where geopolitical risks and potential fragmentation are growing.

Draghi concluded his message with a clear warning: only a united and strategically powerful Europe can avoid division, deindustrialization and dependence on global actors, preserving not only the single market but also its role as a world power. / Pamphlet
