Donald Trump announced that Vladimir Putin has accepted his request not to bomb Ukraine for a week due to the winter cold expected in the coming days.
"I asked Putin not to fire on Kiev and Ukrainian cities because of the record cold for a week," Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House, adding that his Russian counterpart agreed.
"It was a great thing. The Ukrainians almost couldn't believe it," he added.
Temperatures in Ukraine are set to drop to -30°C. A new trilateral meeting has been postponed until next week, but Trump and his colleagues remain optimistic that peace is imminent.
Ukrainian President Zelensky thanked Trump for "an important statement by the American president on the possibility of ensuring the security of Kiev and other Ukrainian cities during this harsh winter period."
Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has indicated that the US military will be prepared to implement any order that President Donald Trump places on Iran.
Hegseth was asked by Trump at a cabinet meeting to comment on the situation, as the latter has sent the Navy near Iran.
“Mr. President, you had to, as many other members of the Cabinet have mentioned, rebuild the perception of America. And in the War Department, that meant restoring deterrence. What happened in Afghanistan, what happened in Ukraine, a war that would never have happened, what happened on October 7th in Israel, would never have happened under President Trump. So, as a result, we have to rebuild the way our enemies perceive us. And when President Trump said, ‘Iran, you will not have a nuclear bomb,’ he meant it. And we sent those B-2s halfway around the world and they never noticed. When he said, ‘We will no longer tolerate drug trafficking in our hemisphere, we treat them like the Al-Qaeda of the Western Hemisphere,’ he meant it, and we are implementing it. When you said, Mr. President, we are securing the border, the military was proud to do its part along with the security of homeland, to do that. Same thing with Iran now, making sure they have every opportunity to make a deal. They should not pursue nuclear capabilities. We will be prepared to provide whatever this president expects from the War Department,” Hegseth said.
